Job Description

A Cardiovascular Perfusionist is a highly skilled healthcare professional who operates the heart-lung machine during cardiac surgery and other procedures that require cardiopulmonary bypass. They are responsible for maintaining the patient’s physiological status and ensuring the proper functioning of the equipment throughout the surgical procedure. Perfusionists play a critical role in supporting the surgical team and contributing to the successful outcomes of cardiac operations.

Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and set up the heart-lung machine and other perfusion equipment prior to surgical procedures.
  • Monitor and adjust the perfusion equipment during surgery to maintain optimal blood flow and oxygenation to the patient.
  • Administer medications and blood products as directed by the surgical team.
  • Collaborate closely with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and other healthcare professionals to ensure safe and effective patient care.
  • Maintain detailed records of the perfusion process, including parameters and changes made during the procedure.
  • Conduct routine maintenance and troubleshooting of perfusion equipment to ensure its proper functioning.
  • Educate patients and their families about the perfusion process and what to expect during surgery.
  • Stay updated on advancements in perfusion technology and techniques through continuing education and professional development.
  • Participate in quality assurance and performance improvement initiatives within the surgical department.
  • Assist in the training and supervision of new staff or students in the field of perfusion.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in perfusion technology or a related field; a master’s degree may be preferred.
  • Certification by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion (ABCP) or an equivalent organization.
  • Strong knowledge of cardiac physiology and surgical procedures.
  • Excellent technical skills in operating and troubleshooting perfusion equipment.
  • Ability to work under pressure and make quick decisions in a dynamic surgical environment.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with surgical teams and support patients.
  • Attention to detail and strong organizational skills.

Work Environment:

  • Primarily in hospital operating rooms and surgical departments, with some time spent in outpatient clinics or training facilities.
  • The role may involve long hours, on-call shifts, and the need to respond to emergencies.
