  • Prepare hides by cleaning, soaking, and removing hair and flesh.
  • Apply tanning agents and chemicals to convert raw hides into durable leather.
  • Monitor the tanning process, ensuring proper timing and conditions to achieve desired leather characteristics.
  • Finish leather by applying dyes, oils, and finishes to enhance appearance and protect against damage.

  • Keep detailed records of tanning processes, materials used, and inventory management.

  • Knowledge of animal biology and the tanning process, including an understanding of various tanning methods (vegetable, chrome, synthetic).
  • Experience in working with leather or in a related manufacturing or craft field.
  • Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills to identify and address quality issues.
  • Ability to operate machinery and tools related to the tanning process safely.
  • Physical stamina to perform tasks that may involve lifting heavy hides and standing for long periods.
  • Good communication skills for collaboration with other team members and departments.
  • A background in chemistry is a plus, especially regarding tanning agents and processes.

Work Environment:
Tanners typically work in tanneries or leather manufacturing facilities. The environment can be noisy and involve exposure to chemicals and dyes used in the tanning process. Safety measures and personal protective equipment (PPE) are essential to ensure a safe working environment. Tanners may work both indoors and outdoors, depending on the facility setup.
