Job Description

A Shipwright is a skilled tradesperson specializing in the construction, repair, and maintenance of wooden and metal boats and ships. This role requires a deep understanding of marine architecture, woodworking, and metalworking techniques. Shipwrights work in shipyards or boatbuilding facilities, where they are responsible for ensuring that vessels are built to meet safety standards, design specifications, and customer expectations. Their work often involves collaborating with other tradespeople, including engineers, electricians, and interior finishers, to complete a project.

Responsibilities:

  • Design and construct various types of vessels, including yachts, fishing boats, and commercial ships, based on blueprints and specifications.
  • Inspect and assess the condition of existing boats and ships, determining necessary repairs or modifications.
  • Use a variety of hand tools, power tools, and machinery to shape and assemble materials, including wood, fiberglass, and metal.
  • Ensure that all work complies with marine regulations, safety standards, and environmental guidelines.
  • Collaborate with naval architects and other professionals to create functional and aesthetically pleasing designs.
  • Supervise and train apprentices and less experienced workers in shipbuilding techniques and safety practices.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work environment, ensuring tools and materials are stored properly.
  • Document project progress, including labor hours, materials used, and costs, to ensure adherence to budgets and timelines.

Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent; completion of a formal apprenticeship in shipbuilding or a related field is highly desirable.
  • Proven experience as a shipwright, boatbuilder, or in a similar role, with a portfolio of completed projects.
  • Proficient in reading and interpreting blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings.
  • Strong skills in woodworking, metalworking, and fiberglass techniques.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team, demonstrating effective communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Knowledge of marine regulations and safety standards related to vessel construction and maintenance.
  • Physical stamina and the ability to perform manual labor, including lifting heavy materials and working in various weather conditions.

Work Environment:
Shipwrights work primarily in shipyards, boatyards, or marine construction sites. The environment can be noisy and physically demanding, often requiring work outdoors or in areas with limited shelter. Shipwrights may encounter various weather conditions and must adhere to safety protocols when working with heavy equipment and tools.
