A Cook is responsible for preparing, cooking, and presenting high-quality dishes in a restaurant, café, or other food service establishment. The Cook works closely with kitchen staff to ensure that meals are prepared to order and delivered promptly while maintaining food safety and hygiene standards. This role requires creativity, attention to detail, and a passion for cooking.

Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and cook meals according to recipes and menu specifications
  • Set up workstations with all needed ingredients and cooking equipment
  • Ensure the quality of food items, including taste, appearance, and freshness
  • Follow health and safety guidelines regarding food preparation and handling
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization in the kitchen and dining areas
  • Assist in the development of new menu items and seasonal specials
  • Monitor food stock levels and place orders for ingredients as needed
  • Collaborate with kitchen staff to ensure timely and efficient meal service
  • Train and mentor junior kitchen staff and apprentices
  • Handle food allergies and dietary restrictions appropriately
  • Prepare ingredients by washing, chopping, and marinating as required
  • Maintain equipment and kitchen appliances in proper working condition
  • Assist with inventory management and food cost control
  • Keep records of food waste and suggest ways to minimize it

Requirements:

  • Previous experience as a Cook or in a similar kitchen role
  • Knowledge of various cooking techniques, ingredients, equipment, and procedures
  • Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong attention to detail and a commitment to high-quality food presentation
  • Good communication skills and the ability to work well in a team
  • Basic math skills for measuring ingredients and managing portion sizes
  • Knowledge of food safety regulations and health codes
  • Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed
  • Culinary degree or certification is a plus but not mandatory

Work Environment:

  • Kitchen environment, which may be hot and busy during peak hours
  • May require standing for extended periods and lifting heavy items
  • Collaborative atmosphere with a team-oriented approach
