As a Medical Examiner, you will be responsible for investigating deaths that occur under unusual or suspicious circumstances. This role requires a thorough understanding of forensic science, pathology, and legal procedures. Medical Examiners perform autopsies, collect evidence, and provide expert testimony in court to assist law enforcement and legal professionals in understanding the cause and manner of death.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct comprehensive autopsies to determine the cause of death, including examinations of organs, tissues, and bodily fluids
  • Collect and preserve forensic evidence during autopsies for further analysis
  • Collaborate with law enforcement agencies and investigators to provide insights related to suspicious deaths
  • Prepare detailed reports and documentation of findings, including autopsy results and investigative notes
  • Testify in court as an expert witness regarding autopsy findings and the implications for ongoing investigations
  • Stay updated on advancements in forensic pathology and medical examination techniques
  • Assist in the identification of deceased individuals and the notification of next of kin
  • Train and mentor junior medical examiners, pathology residents, and forensic interns
  • Participate in multidisciplinary meetings to discuss complex cases and provide recommendations

Requirements:

  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree, with specialized training in forensic pathology
  • Board certification in forensic pathology is highly preferred
  • Previous experience as a forensic pathologist or medical examiner is an advantage
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail in assessing medical evidence
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for report writing and courtroom testimony
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple cases simultaneously
  • Knowledge of relevant laws and regulations pertaining to death investigations and forensic practices
  • Must be able to pass a background check and maintain confidentiality in sensitive cases

Work Environment:

  • Primarily laboratory and office-based, with visits to crime scenes when necessary
  • May involve working with law enforcement agencies, forensic teams, and legal professionals
  • Fast-paced and sometimes emotionally challenging due to the nature of the work
