Descripción del trabajo

A Potter specializes in creating functional and decorative items from clay through various techniques, such as wheel throwing, hand-building, and glazing. This artistic profession requires a deep understanding of ceramics, including the properties of different types of clay, firing techniques, and glazes. Potters often design unique pieces for functional use, such as dinnerware, as well as artistic sculptures that showcase their creativity and craftsmanship.

Responsibilities:

  • Prepare clay by wedging and conditioning it to ensure optimal workability.
  • Create pottery items using various methods, including wheel throwing, hand-building, and sculpting.
  • Design and develop original pieces, considering functionality and aesthetic appeal.
  • Apply glazes and decorative techniques to enhance the finished product.
  • Operate kilns to fire pottery, ensuring proper temperature control and firing schedules.
  • Maintain a clean and organized workspace, including tools, equipment, and materials.
  • Collaborate with other artists or participate in local art shows and exhibitions to showcase work.
  • Stay updated on pottery trends and techniques to enhance skills and broaden artistic expression.

Requirements:

  • Proven experience as a Potter or in a related field, such as ceramics or fine arts.
  • Strong artistic skills and creativity, with an eye for design and detail.
  • Knowledge of different clay types, glazing techniques, and firing processes.
  • Proficiency in operating pottery wheels and other tools and equipment.
  • Good physical stamina and dexterity, as the job involves manual labor and repetitive motions.
  • Strong communication skills for interacting with customers and collaborating with other artists.
  • A portfolio showcasing previous work is often required for potential employment or sales opportunities.

Work Environment:
Potters typically work in studios, workshops, or home-based setups, which can be shared or independent spaces. The environment may be dusty due to clay work, and safety measures should be taken when operating kilns and handling materials. Potters may also attend craft fairs or galleries to display and sell their work, providing an opportunity for customer interaction and community engagement.
