Forensic Anthropologists apply their expertise in human skeletal biology to assist law enforcement in identifying human remains and determining the cause of death. Working at the intersection of science and criminal investigation, they analyze bones to uncover crucial details such as age, sex, ancestry, trauma, and time since death. Forensic Anthropologists often collaborate with medical examiners, law enforcement, and archaeologists in criminal cases, mass disasters, or historical investigations.

Responsibilities:

  • Analyze human skeletal remains to establish identity and determine cause of death
  • Collaborate with law enforcement agencies and medical examiners during criminal investigations
  • Prepare detailed reports and expert testimonies for court presentations
  • Use scientific techniques, including osteology, DNA analysis, and radiology, to assess skeletal remains
  • Identify trauma or signs of foul play on bones to assist in solving crimes
  • Work on cases involving mass graves, war crimes, natural disasters, or archaeological sites
  • Provide education and training to law enforcement on the recovery and preservation of skeletal remains
  • Collaborate with pathologists and forensic scientists in multi-disciplinary teams
  • Participate in exhumations and ensure proper handling of remains for forensic analysis
  • Conduct research and contribute to academic publications in the field of forensic anthropology
  • Offer expert consultation in legal and humanitarian cases

Requirements:

  • PhD in Anthropology, with a specialization in Forensic Anthropology
  • Extensive knowledge of human osteology and skeletal analysis techniques
  • Experience in forensic casework, including human identification and trauma analysis
  • Strong research skills and the ability to interpret complex data
  • Ability to work under pressure in high-stakes criminal investigations
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills for report writing and court testimonies
  • Proficiency in using forensic tools and technology for skeletal analysis (e.g., CT scans, X-rays)
  • Experience working in collaboration with law enforcement, medical professionals, and legal teams
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to scientific accuracy
  • Physical ability to work in various environments, including outdoor excavation sites

Work Environment:

  • Primarily laboratory-based but may require fieldwork at crime scenes, excavation sites, or mass disaster locations
  • Frequent collaboration with law enforcement, pathologists, and other forensic specialists
  • Work may involve dealing with sensitive and distressing materials in crime investigations
