Job Description

Blacksmiths are skilled metalworkers who create, repair, and maintain metal objects by heating and shaping them using hammers, anvils, and specialized tools. Traditionally, blacksmiths produced tools, weapons, and other items, but modern blacksmiths may craft anything from custom furniture and artistic sculptures to repair work on machinery. This role requires a deep understanding of metals and the ability to work with fire, forge, and heavy equipment to shape raw materials into functional or artistic pieces.

Responsibilities:

  • Heat metal to the correct temperature for shaping using forges and other heat sources.
  • Use tools like hammers, anvils, tongs, and chisels to shape metal into the desired form.
  • Repair or create metal items such as tools, gates, railings, and ornamental pieces.
  • Weld, cut, and finish metals using modern techniques like arc welding or plasma cutting.
  • Study blueprints, technical drawings, or design specifications to understand project requirements.
  • Ensure safety protocols are followed, especially when working with extreme heat and heavy tools.
  • Perform maintenance on forges, anvils, and other equipment to keep them in working condition.

Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent; apprenticeship or formal training in blacksmithing preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of metallurgy, heat treatment, and metalworking techniques.
  • Physical strength, endurance, and manual dexterity to handle heavy tools and materials.
  • Precision and attention to detail in shaping and finishing metal pieces.
  • Experience using forges, hammers, anvils, and welding equipment.
  • Creative problem-solving skills for custom projects or repairs.
  • Understanding of modern welding and cutting technologies is a plus.

Work Environment:

  • Typically works in a forge or workshop environment.
  • Exposure to high heat, sparks, and physical labor is common.
  • Safety precautions such as protective clothing, gloves, and eyewear are essential.
  • May work alone on projects or collaborate with other artisans and tradespeople.
  • Some outdoor work may be required, particularly for on-site installations or repairs.
