Job Description

A Tailor is responsible for altering, repairing, and creating garments according to customer specifications or design patterns. They take measurements, fit clothes, and make precise adjustments to ensure proper fit, comfort, and appearance. Tailors work with a variety of fabrics and materials, including clothing, curtains, and upholstery. Their expertise in stitching, hemming, and sewing makes them key players in the fashion and garment industries. Tailors may work in retail shops, boutiques, or custom tailor studios and occasionally assist in designing custom-made garments for special events.

Responsibilities:

  • Take detailed measurements of clients to ensure accurate garment alterations and fittings.
  • Perform garment repairs, alterations, and resizing based on customer requests or design patterns.
  • Sew, stitch, hem, and adjust clothing such as suits, dresses, trousers, and jackets to achieve a perfect fit.
  • Design and construct custom-made garments from scratch, working closely with customers to meet their needs.
  • Perform fitting sessions with customers to assess garment fit and make necessary adjustments.
  • Work with various types of fabrics, including delicate or specialized materials, to execute repairs and alterations.
  • Operate and maintain sewing machines, irons, and other equipment to ensure accurate stitching and clean finishes.
  • Provide recommendations to clients regarding fabric choices, tailoring options, and design enhancements.
  • Ensure all garments are finished on time and meet quality standards before delivery to clients.
  • Keep detailed records of alterations, measurements, and customer preferences for future reference.

Requirements:

  • Proven experience as a tailor, seamstress, or similar role in garment alteration or creation.
  • Proficiency in sewing and altering garments using sewing machines, needles, and hand-stitching techniques.
  • Strong knowledge of different fabrics, their properties, and handling techniques.
  • Attention to detail and precision when measuring, cutting, and sewing fabrics.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to work closely with clients and understand their needs.
  • Ability to follow design patterns and instructions carefully to ensure the desired fit and appearance.
  • Time management skills to meet deadlines and complete alterations or custom garments on schedule.
  • Physical dexterity and stamina to work with heavy fabrics or stand for long periods while sewing or fitting garments.
  • Basic knowledge of fashion design, textiles, and garment construction is a plus.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends or evenings, depending on customer demand.

Work Environment:

  • Tailors typically work in retail clothing stores, tailor shops, dry cleaners, or fashion design studios.
  • The work environment is usually well-lit, with sewing machines, cutting tables, and garment racks.
  • Tailors often work individually, but they may also collaborate with other tailors or designers on larger projects.
  • Depending on the volume of work, tailors may spend long hours sitting at a sewing machine or standing to fit clients.
  • The job may require lifting or moving fabrics, garments, or sewing equipment.
