Job Description

The Stage Manager is responsible for coordinating all aspects of a theatrical production or live performance to ensure smooth and efficient operations. The stage manager acts as the communication hub between the director, performers, technical crew, and production staff, ensuring that rehearsals and performances run seamlessly. They manage the logistics of rehearsals, call cues during performances, and handle any issues that arise backstage. This role requires strong organizational, leadership, and communication skills, as well as the ability to handle high-pressure situations calmly.

Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate and manage rehearsals, ensuring schedules are followed and all team members are on the same page
  • Act as the liaison between the director, performers, technical crew, and production staff
  • Oversee set changes, props, lighting, sound, and other technical aspects of the production during rehearsals and performances
  • Call cues for lights, sound, and actor entrances/exits during performances to ensure the show runs smoothly
  • Maintain up-to-date scripts, blocking notes, and cue sheets, and ensure all changes are communicated to relevant parties
  • Organize and conduct production meetings with the cast, crew, and creative team to discuss progress, changes, or challenges
  • Manage the setup and breakdown of the stage, ensuring all props, costumes, and sets are correctly placed and stored
  • Handle any on-the-spot issues that arise during performances, such as technical difficulties or actor problems
  • Ensure that all health and safety standards are met and that the stage is a safe working environment for all team members
  • Communicate clearly with the cast and crew about call times, changes to the schedule, and other important information
  • Ensure performers are ready for rehearsals and performances by keeping track of time and notifying them when they need to be on stage
  • Manage backstage activities, ensuring that all personnel are where they need to be, and equipment is functioning properly
  • Work closely with costume designers, set designers, and technical staff to ensure that their elements are correctly implemented
  • Record all blocking, light, and sound cues during rehearsals and ensure they are followed during performances
  • Create detailed rehearsal reports and performance reports, noting any changes, issues, or highlights
  • Be prepared to assist with any other production needs that arise during rehearsals or performances
  • Ensure continuity and consistency between rehearsals and performances, tracking any changes or adjustments

Requirements:

  • Proven experience as a stage manager or assistant stage manager in theater or live events
  • Strong organizational and multitasking skills to manage various aspects of production simultaneously
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with directors, actors, technical crew, and production staff
  • Ability to remain calm and focused under pressure, particularly during live performances
  • Knowledge of theatrical terminology and stage directions, including cue calling for lighting, sound, and actors
  • Ability to manage time effectively and ensure all rehearsals and performances start and run on schedule
  • Keen attention to detail, especially when recording blocking, cues, and other production notes
  • Leadership qualities to manage a team of technical crew and assistants
  • Understanding of basic technical aspects of lighting, sound, set, and props
  • Flexibility to adapt to changes and handle last-minute issues that may arise during rehearsals or shows
  • Physical stamina to work long hours, including evenings and weekends, and to be on your feet for extended periods during performances
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to make quick decisions during live performances

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience working on large-scale productions, such as musicals or opera, with complex technical needs
  • Familiarity with theater management software, scheduling tools, and cue tracking systems
  • Knowledge of health and safety protocols specific to the theater or live performance environments
  • Experience working in different types of venues, from traditional theaters to outdoor or non-conventional spaces
  • Previous experience in coordinating large casts and technical teams

Work Environment:

  • The role is based primarily in theaters, performance venues, or live event spaces
  • Requires evening, weekend, and holiday availability, especially during production runs
  • Work involves being on your feet for long hours and moving between different areas of the venue during rehearsals and performances
