Job Description

The Dental Hygienist plays a critical role in promoting oral health by providing preventative dental care, performing cleanings, and educating patients on proper oral hygiene. Working under the supervision of a dentist, the dental hygienist is responsible for examining patients for signs of oral diseases, removing plaque and tartar, and applying preventative materials such as fluoride and sealants. This position requires strong technical skills, attention to detail, and a passion for helping patients maintain healthy smiles.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform routine dental cleanings, including scaling and polishing teeth.
  • Examine patients’ oral health, checking for signs of disease, cavities, and damage to teeth or gums.
  • Take and develop dental x-rays to help diagnose dental conditions.
  • Apply preventive treatments, such as fluoride and dental sealants, to protect teeth from decay.
  • Educate patients on proper oral hygiene techniques, including brushing, flossing, and using mouthwash.
  • Provide guidance on dental care products, diets, and habits that promote oral health.
  • Record and maintain accurate patient histories and treatment notes.
  • Assist the dentist during examinations or treatments as needed.
  • Sterilize dental instruments and ensure all tools and equipment are properly maintained.
  • Follow up with patients regarding their oral health and recommend further treatments if necessary.

Requirements:

  • Associate degree in Dental Hygiene from an accredited program.
  • Current licensure as a Dental Hygienist in the state of practice.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to educate patients effectively.
  • Strong attention to detail and manual dexterity.
  • Knowledge of dental software for maintaining patient records is a plus.
  • CPR certification is often required.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a dental office setting.

Work Environment:

  • Works primarily in a dental office or clinic setting.
  • May involve long periods of sitting and standing, with frequent use of hands and dental instruments.
  • Potential exposure to bodily fluids and dental materials, following standard safety and sterilization protocols is necessary.
