Job Description

A Cooper is a skilled craftsman who specializes in the construction and repair of wooden barrels, casks, and other containers used for storage and aging of liquids such as wine, beer, and spirits. This traditional trade requires a deep understanding of wood types, barrel construction techniques, and the aging process, as well as the ability to work with precision and attention to detail. Coopers often combine artistry with functionality to create products that not only serve a practical purpose but also enhance the aesthetic appeal of the beverages they contain.

Responsibilities:

  • Select appropriate wood types, such as oak, for barrel construction based on the desired characteristics of the finished product.
  • Cut, shape, and assemble staves (the wooden planks used to construct barrels) to form a watertight structure.
  • Use traditional tools such as chisels, planes, and steam to bend and shape the staves.
  • Install the barrel heads and make necessary adjustments to ensure a secure and leak-proof seal.
  • Repair and refurbish existing barrels by replacing damaged staves, heads, or hoops (the metal bands that hold the staves together).
  • Collaborate with winemakers and distillers to understand their specific needs and preferences for barrel aging.
  • Maintain a clean and organized workspace, ensuring tools and materials are properly stored and maintained.
  • Stay updated on industry trends and techniques to improve craftsmanship and efficiency.

Requirements:

  • Proven experience as a Cooper or in a related field, such as woodworking or carpentry.
  • Strong knowledge of wood properties, barrel construction techniques, and aging processes.
  • Proficiency in using hand tools and machinery relevant to the trade.
  • Attention to detail and strong problem-solving skills for repairs and custom projects.
  • Good physical stamina, as the job involves lifting and handling heavy materials.
  • Effective communication skills for interacting with clients and collaborating with other craftsmen.
  • A high school diploma or equivalent; additional training in woodworking or a related field is beneficial.

Work Environment:
Coopers typically work in workshops or manufacturing facilities equipped with specialized tools and machinery for barrel construction. The work environment may be noisy and dusty, requiring the use of personal protective equipment. Coopers may also work outdoors when harvesting wood or when involved in on-site repairs. The job may involve physical labor, including lifting heavy barrels and materials.
