Job Description

A Groomer/Stables Worker is responsible for the care and management of horses and the maintenance of stables. This role involves daily grooming, feeding, and exercising horses, as well as ensuring the cleanliness and safety of the stables. Groomers often work closely with horse owners, trainers, and veterinarians to promote the health and well-being of the animals. Attention to detail and a genuine love for animals are essential for success in this position.

Responsibilities:

  • Groom horses daily, which includes brushing, bathing, and trimming manes and tails to maintain their appearance and health.
  • Feed horses according to their dietary requirements, ensuring they receive the appropriate amount of hay, grains, and supplements.
  • Clean and maintain stables, including mucking out stalls, cleaning water buckets, and ensuring the overall hygiene of the facility.
  • Exercise and handle horses, which may involve riding, leading, or lunging, to keep them physically fit and well-trained.
  • Monitor the health and behavior of horses, reporting any changes or concerns to the appropriate personnel, such as trainers or veterinarians.
  • Assist with the administration of medications or treatments as directed by veterinary staff.
  • Ensure that all equipment, tools, and facilities are kept in good condition and are stored properly.
  • Assist with transporting horses to and from events, shows, or veterinary appointments when necessary.

Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent; experience working with horses is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of horse care, grooming techniques, and stable management practices.
  • Ability to handle horses safely and confidently, demonstrating a good understanding of equine behavior.
  • Physical fitness and stamina to perform manual labor, including lifting heavy feed bags and mucking out stalls.
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to follow instructions carefully.
  • Good communication skills to interact with horse owners, trainers, and team members effectively.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays, as needed.

Work Environment:
Groomers/Stables Workers primarily work outdoors in stables or barns and may be exposed to various weather conditions. The environment can be noisy, with the sounds of horses and equipment. Workers must be comfortable around large animals and be prepared to perform physically demanding tasks.
