Job Description

A Charge Nurse is a registered nurse (RN) who is responsible for overseeing the nursing staff and coordinating patient care within a specific unit or department in a healthcare facility. This role involves not only providing direct patient care but also managing the operational aspects of the unit, including staffing, scheduling, and ensuring compliance with policies and regulations. The Charge Nurse plays a crucial leadership role in promoting quality patient care, supporting staff development, and ensuring a safe environment for both patients and healthcare providers.

Responsibilities:

  • Supervise and coordinate nursing activities and personnel within the assigned unit.
  • Assess patient care needs and develop individualized care plans in collaboration with the healthcare team.
  • Provide direct patient care, including administering medications, treatments, and therapies as prescribed.
  • Monitor and evaluate patient progress, and adjust care plans as necessary to achieve optimal outcomes.
  • Ensure compliance with hospital policies, procedures, and regulatory standards, including infection control and safety protocols.
  • Assist in staffing decisions, including scheduling, hiring, and training new nursing staff.
  • Serve as a resource and mentor for nursing staff, providing guidance and support as needed.
  • Conduct regular team meetings to discuss patient care issues, staff concerns, and departmental goals.
  • Collaborate with physicians and other healthcare professionals to ensure coordinated and effective patient care.
  • Handle patient and family inquiries and concerns, providing education and support as necessary.

Requirements:

  • Current RN license and a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
  • Previous experience in a nursing role, with at least 1-2 years in a supervisory or leadership capacity preferred.
  • Strong clinical assessment and decision-making skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for effective collaboration with patients, families, and the healthcare team.
  • Knowledge of electronic health records (EHR) and nursing software.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple priorities simultaneously.

Work Environment:

  • Typically works in a hospital or healthcare facility, within a specific unit such as emergency, intensive care, or medical-surgical.
  • May require working nights, weekends, and holidays, depending on the unit’s needs.
