Job Description

The Payroll Director is responsible for overseeing the entire payroll process for the organization, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local regulations while maintaining the accuracy and timeliness of payroll activities. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in payroll management, strong leadership skills, and a thorough understanding of payroll software systems. This role ensures the smooth execution of payroll functions for all employees while driving continuous improvements in payroll processes.

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee and manage the entire payroll function, ensuring accurate and timely processing of all employee pay
  • Ensure compliance with all payroll-related regulations, including federal, state, and local tax laws
  • Lead, mentor, and manage the payroll team, providing guidance and support for complex payroll issues
  • Develop, implement, and maintain payroll policies and procedures to ensure consistency and accuracy
  • Ensure timely filing and payment of payroll taxes, and manage relationships with external auditors and tax authorities
  • Collaborate with HR, Finance, and other departments to ensure payroll aligns with organizational policies and objectives
  • Lead payroll system implementations and upgrades, ensuring smooth integration with other systems (HRIS, timekeeping, etc.)
  • Prepare and present payroll reports, metrics, and analytics to senior leadership
  • Manage payroll audits and resolve discrepancies, ensuring compliance with internal and external audit requirements
  • Handle escalated payroll issues, including complex employee compensation or benefits questions
  • Stay current with industry trends, payroll best practices, and regulatory changes that affect payroll operations

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Human Resources, or related field
  • 8+ years of experience in payroll management, with at least 3 years in a leadership role
  • Strong knowledge of payroll laws, regulations, and tax requirements
  • Proficiency with payroll software systems (experience with systems like ADP, Workday, or similar is preferred)
  • Excellent leadership and team management skills
  • High attention to detail, with strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to interact effectively with employees at all levels
  • Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) or similar certification is a plus
